The battle of Tannenberg was between the Germans and Russians. The German Army that was led by Paul Van Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff, who declared war against the Russians 2nd army, that was led by General Aleksandra Samssonov.
Before the battle had occurred the Russian Army was successfully invading eastern Germany. The first army attacked the north and the second army attacked the south east. The plan for the Russian army was to encircle and destroy the eighth army however, the first army took a stop for a few days which resulted in the second army to be exposed for the German army.
Germans plan was to take all of their soldiers to attack the Russian second army. However this was a risk because that let them be exposed. One of their tactics was to use trains to transport troops very quickly around the region. The Germans were concentrating in all of their soldiers to be in one area and they attacked the Russian Army on the left part of the area.
However the problem was that the two Russian armies were not able to communicate to each other effectively on what movements they were planning due to the great Masrian Lakes that will later result in something deadly. On August 26, Samsonov and Rennenkempfs were sending uuencoded wireless messages. Which then resulted the Germans surprising Samsonov’s army by attacking near the village of Tannenberg. Since Ludendorff had delayed the war it gave time to Samsonov’s forces to advance deeper in the sacks that were formed by the German divisions. After the three days of planning by German artillery the Samsonov’s troops began to retreat. Many German forces cut their path and it lead to big massive slaughter.
Then in August 30, Samsonov faced his reality that his army had collapsed due to a smaller army force and using the same battle tactics. This led him to go into the forest and kill himself. The Germans defeated the Russians and the Russians second army, that was in retreat. Many of the Russian soldiers were killed or wounded about 50,000 out of 206, 00, which is an enormous amount. Also another 100, 00 were taken as a prisoner.
